POSITION GUIDE

Girls flag football positions explained

Every position in girls flag football, what it actually asks of you, and how to figure out which role fits your game before your first practice.

Offense and defense, position by position

OFFENSE

Quarterback

The QB touches the ball every snap. She reads the defense, works through her progressions, and delivers an accurate ball on time. Best fit for athletes with arm strength, quick decision-making, and calm under pressure.

  • Accuracy
  • Field vision
  • Pocket movement
  • Leadership

OFFENSE

Center

The center snaps the ball and immediately releases into a route, often as the quarterback's safety valve. Consistent snaps and dependable short-area hands matter more than raw speed.

  • Clean snaps
  • Sure hands
  • Route timing

OFFENSE

Wide receiver

Receivers win with route running and separation. In flag, sharp cuts beat straight-line speed — the ability to sell a route and come back to the ball is what creates completions.

  • Route running
  • Hands
  • Change of direction

OFFENSE

Running back / motion

In most 5-on-5 and 7-on-7 formats, the back works out of motion, taking sweeps, screens, and quick pitches. Elusiveness in space is the whole job — there are no tackles to break, only flags to protect.

  • Elusiveness
  • Acceleration
  • Ball security

DEFENSE

Rusher

The rusher starts seven yards off the ball and attacks the quarterback. Timing the snap and taking an efficient angle turns a rush into a sack — the single biggest momentum play in flag football.

  • Burst
  • Snap timing
  • Pursuit angles

DEFENSE

Cornerback

Corners cover receivers one-on-one. Flag pulling technique matters as much as coverage: reach for the flag, not the body, and keep your feet under you through the pull.

  • Backpedal
  • Flag pulling
  • Recovery speed

DEFENSE

Safety

The safety is the last line of defense and the quarterback of the defensive huddle. She reads the QB's eyes, keeps everything in front of her, and cleans up broken plays.

  • Deep vision
  • Communication
  • Tackling angles

DEFENSE

Blitzer / linebacker

A hybrid role that covers the short middle, spies the running back, and occasionally adds to the rush. Great fit for athletes who diagnose plays quickly and love contactless physicality.

  • Play recognition
  • Zone drops
  • Versatility
